收听文章音频

On December 8, 2024, the government of Syria fell during a large attack by opposition forces. President Bashar al-Assad was leading the government. The attack was by Tahrir al-Sham and was mainly supported by the Syrian National Army. This was part of the civil war that started in 2011. When Damascus fell, it ended the Assad family’s rule. They had been in power since 1971 when Hafez al-Assad took control.

As the opposition, called the Southern Operations Room, got closer to Damascus, reports said Assad fled. He flew on a plane to Russia to join his family who had already gone there. Later, the Russian government confirmed Assad’s resignation. After he left, the opposition declared victory on state TV.

The quick collapse of Assad’s government shocked many people. Even Syrian opposition fighters were surprised at how fast the government fell. Experts saw this as a big loss for Iran’s Axis of Resistance because Syria was important for supplying their ally Hezbollah.

On December 8, 2024, the government of Syria, led by President Bashar al-Assad, fell during a large attack by opposition forces. The attack was led by Tahrir al-Sham and supported mainly by the Syrian National Army, as part of the ongoing civil war that started in 2011. The fall of Damascus marked the end of the Assad family’s rule, which had been in power since Hafez al-Assad took control in 1971 after the Corrective Revolution.

As the opposition forces, known as the Southern Operations Room, moved closer to Damascus, reports said that Assad fled the city on a plane to Russia, where he joined his family who had already gone into exile. The Russian government later confirmed Assad’s resignation and departure from Syria. After his departure, the opposition forces declared victory on state television.

The quick collapse of Assad’s government shocked people around the world. Even Syrian opposition fighters were surprised by how fast the regime fell after their attack. Many experts saw this event as a big loss for Iran’s Axis of Resistance, as Syria had been a key route for supplying weapons and supplies to their ally Hezbollah.
